How to Install

Tools (Recommended)

This installation can be completed with hand tools, but power tools will simplify the process:

  • Drill with 1-in. bit

  • Small impact wrench

  • Angle grinder with cutting wheel

  • Reciprocating saw

  • Measuring tape or framing square

Before You Begin

  • Gate must be level with at least 10 in. ground clearance

  • Distance between gate end and latch post must be 1 in. or less

Mounting the Latch

1. From the gate end nearest the latch post, measure 21 in. inward along

the top rail and mark. This is the only required measurement

and is critical for proper operation.

2. Install one fastener at the 21-in. mark on the top rail. Do not tighten.

3. Slide the Horseman’s Gravity Latch (handle up) through the fastener.

When the top of the barrel is flush with the top of the gate, snug the fastener (do not fully tighten).

4. Pivot the bottom of the latch toward the gate so the barrel does not extend past the gate end.

Secure with a second fastener, (snug but not tight).

5. Confirm fit: Top of barrel: 21 in. mark and flush with the top rail.

Bottom of barrel: flush with gate edge.

6. Ensure the Twist ’N’ Lock slot faces away from the gate (on the side, not top or bottom).

7. Tighten the first two fasteners. Do not over tighten—fasteners may break.

8. Install the third fastener on any rail between the first two.

9. Test operation: lift → twist to hold open; reverse twist → to allow latch to drop.

10. Remove fastener tails using tin snips or a grinder.

Drilling the Receiving Slot

1. At the latch angle, drill a 1-in. hole into the post.

2. Drill a second 1-in. hole at the same angle, 5 in. below the first.

3. Connect holes with a reciprocating saw to form a 1 × 5 in. vertical slot.

The vertical slot allows for gate sag from snow or ice and ensures reliable latching.

A round hole may appear sufficient but will cause issues over time.
